Glasgow
I always knew I would visit Scotland at some point during my time in Europe, but I didn’t think I would be lucky enough to explore it quite as well I did. What started as a short trip soon turned into ten days exploring some of the most amazing landscapes and scenery the country has on offer. My trip began with a train to Glasgow where I stayed for two days. A friend spent her own study abroad semester in the city and suggested that it would be a good place to start and then work my way across east.
Glasgow has a lot to offer despite what many may think. The best part of Glasgow is its easy going nature, yet the city has an expansive underlying cultural influence that isn’t apparent at first glance. I was surprised to discover the extent of it’s cultural and architectural influences with can be found throughout the streets and in other parts of the globe. I began a relaxed Sunday by taking a visit to the Gallery of Modern Art where I was given a tour with a volunteer guide. We also had a long discussion about the city, it’s history and some of the most prominent pieces in the gallery. The city is encased in the living history of it’s architectural heroes, most notably Charles Rennie Mackintosh, you’ll have much to explore if you’re passionate about design. Take a wander through the city and walk up a spiral staircase in The Lighthouse, there you’ll find some wonderful views of the city surrounds.
I felt very welcomed by the city and it was a wonderful first stop for the beginning of my visit to Scotland. I’m very much looking forward to returning to the city again some day! (Also: yes that is a traffic cone on top of that statue – read about it here) Next up on the Scotland photo diary will be the city of Edinburgh!
